Our Judgment
K. ANDREW TURNER

Sit
down
look across the room
table
cups of coffee
stains of past
cups of coffee
or tea or water
or beer or wine
and
watch:
the woman
in a straw hat
read yesterday’s
last month’s
newspaper
then leave
with her shopping
basket;
or the man
drop his backpack
then read
a paperback
like he doesn’t
want to be home
with his
perhaps-wife
and maybe-kids;
or the girl
playing with her
dolls blond
and white
unlike her;
or the couple
in ugly sweaters
for christmas
walking arm in arm
like they were
happy;
or the woman
in leggings
like she’d come
from yoga
or the laundry mat;
or the young man
staring
at her leggings
because he feels
he can
birth-gift-right
of being man;
or the woman
in pink
with a backpack
kawaii
with maybe-kids
and a yes-husband
who is judged
to be too old
for a kawaii
backpack;
or the cars
driving by
parading;
or the screen
blocking
construction from view;
or the homeless
near-invisible
with their yes-hungry
stares and
yes-sad eyes
and their yes-needing
pleas
and our no-I-cannot
smiles;
or boys
on skateboards;
or girls
on skateboards;
or birds
in the trees
or on the ground
or eating;
or the benches
we sit in;
or everyone
or the clouds
or nature
or anything
watch
with our
senses
alight
the world
judged in
every word.
